LET’S ALL MEET UP IN THE YEAR 2000! WITH CHLOE CHERRY
INTERVIEW BY NICOLò MICHIELIN Photography by Alyssa Kazew(Won’t it be strange when we’re all fully grown?)
“So, the old duality of life, wherein there had been a weekday world of people and trains and duties and reports, and besides that a Sunday world of absolute truth and living mystery, of walking upon the waters and being blinded by the face of the Lord, of following the pillar of cloud across the desert and watching the bush that crackled yet did not burn away, this old, unquestioned duality suddenly was found to be broken apart. The weekday world had triumphed over the Sunday world. The Sunday world was not real, or at least, not actual. And one lived by action.
“Only the weekday world mattered. She herself, Ursula Brangwen, must know how to take the weekday life. Her body must be a weekday body, held in the world’s estimate. Her soul must have a weekday value, known according to the world’s knowledge.”
The Rainbow – D.H. Lawrence
Can you tell us why you chose the name Chloe Cherry?
I’ve just always loved the name Chloe. Cherry came from one day I was at the farmers market and I was looking at the stuff and thinking about food and I wanted a C name and I thought “Chloe Carrots, Chloe Crème Brûlée, Chloe Cupcake, Chloe Cherry…?” And I went with Chloe Cherry because my agent at the time for some reason said the others were stupid.
Besides being an actress and a model, you are also a DJ. What about your musical taste? What are your favorite bands? Do you have any songs that have a special meaning for you? If yes, can you tell us about it?
My musical taste when I DJ is mostly rap and pop. I like hyper pop and indie rock, too. I like remixing them to make them dancy and almost techno. I really just play anything that I would listen to myself. I like to make playlists that make me want to dance. A song that has a special meaning to me is Gasolina by Daddy Yankee. I don’t have any real reason it’s special, but if you know it, you’ll understand – it’s a classic and it is a perfect song. I can only dream of making music that good.
Favorite movies and directors?
My favorite director is Sam Levinson. Not only was he great to work with personally on Euphoria, but he makes projects that really speak to me and grab my attention. I also love Sean Baker and was so excited about him just winning at Cannes a lot. He’s on my list of someone that I have wanted to work with for a long time. Peter Vack rocks, too. My favorite movies are The Big Short, Wolf of Wall Street, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Tangerine, The Florida Project, and so many A24 projects.
What do you think about the political correctness we are experiencing nowadays? Do you think it is going in the right direction or do you think it is exaggerated?
People being politically correct came out of wanting to be kinder to groups that had been marginalized, which I think is very nice. We need to be kinder to people. But I don’t think it’s an excuse to go after people who might innocently use the wrong word. We can help people learn.
What role do you think actors, musicians, or artists in general can (or should) play regarding political topics?
I think if you have a large platform, you can use it the way you want, for better or for worse. If you want to support politicians or causes, then do it. I don’t understand when people say that actors shouldn’t get involved in politics. Do they think only politicians should comment?
Do you believe that cinema has the power to influence society and culture?
I do. We can create what we see or what we hope for. All art has always been used in this way.
If you could choose any historical era to live in, which would it be?
I would choose to live in the 2000s because I like the fact that there wasn’t too much technology or social media.
If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose?
I would spend the day with Howard Hughes because I feel like we would match each other’s freak.
Who are the people who inspired you the most?
Zendaya, Patton Oswalt, Sean Baker, Jeremy Strong, Eric André, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Pete Davidson.
If you had to choose 5 celebrities of today to work with, who would they be?
I would love to work with Rachel Sennott, Margot Robbie, Lena Dunham, Scott Aukerman, Sean Baker and Timothee Chalamet.
What’s the weirdest thing that happened on set?
I ended up dating the actor who was playing my crush. We are still together – and it’s so romantic that we met that way.
What can you not stand in people?
It irritates me when people are late, when people don’t take care of themselves, when they’re unhappy with themselves but don’t do anything about it. I don’t like people who are needlessly negative.
Your favorite style icons?
Julia Fox, Bella Hadid, my friend Sean O’Neill, Madeline Pendleton, Cindy Kimberly.
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Definitely invisibility.
If you could commit a crime, or do something in general, without anyone ever knowing about it, what would you do?
Definitely graffiti. The whole world will know my name because I’ll put it everywhere.
What work would you have wanted to do if you were not in your profession?
Wrestling or boxing.
Can you tell us about work someone else has done that you wish you could do, too?
I wish I could have played Daphne on Frasier.
What is the thing you love the most about Italy?
I have been to Italy and I love it. The people, the food, I even love the flag! Amazing fashion, too – some of the best ever.

The best in rap currently are Young Nut, 21 Savage, Central Cee, Don Toliver, Blaketheman1000, Ice Spice, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Asap Rocky, Yung Lean.

Do you think that in certain environments, especially those in which we find fame and money, there is a lack of certain values?
There is always going to be a lack of certain values in any culture, anywhere you look. There are good and bad people everywhere, but I think the good outnumber the bad.
On a scale from 1 to 10, how important is it for you to be rich?
It’s important for me to be able to have the freedom to make choices instead of having to take a job. I am happy to have enough money to help out with friends and family and have fun. Beyond that, I don’t need to be “rich.”
And fame?
Not important. It’s a byproduct of getting to do what I love.
